REFLECTION
Regarding the shortcomings of this project, I have summarized the following points:
1. Commercial Animation
Because I initially expected this project to be a subject with a higher degree of freedom, and I hope to try 3D modelling. So I had some resistance to making commercial short films at first. Subconsciously I thought they were boring, and I worried that I would learn little new techniques from them. However, this is a wrong notion. Facts have proved that commercial short films are also very difficult, such as how to cleverly design each picture and accurately explain the meaning corresponding to the picture. So I am delighted to try to get in touch with commercial animation at this stage, and to accumulate the next period of experience for the future.
2. Ambiguity of Ideas and Procrastination
Because I rejected commercial animation at first, I was not sure what kind of animation I wanted to make at the beginning, whether being brave to experiment with abstract animation or a well-behaved commercial animation. My team members have no idea either. So I spent a lot of time replacing and improving on ideas.
And for our first Internm, due to the school schedule, we did not present and receive feedback at the expected time. Our presentation was delayed and wasted our time for a whole week.
So we basically started to animate after school started in the new year. The time was very tight, so I couldn’t complete the PDF in the end according to my standards, and I only submitted it after ensuring the completion for the time being.
3. Time Planning
In the beginning, I felt that the time given for this project was too long, from October to the end of January, a total of 4 months. But then I laid out the plan and found that if the essay was completed in two weeks, and the entire Christmas holiday was used for animation production, then the time was just enough. But the actual timing didn’t develop as planned. Since I got an A for my work last semester, but I only got a C- for my essay (it was also my first time writing an essay), so I started reading various essay books last semester. And this time I made up my mind to improve this course’s grades. So I spent quite a lot of time on this assessment. I have been writing since the holidays start, although I basically work every day, because of procrastination, I did not complete all the tasks until the beginning of school. Because I was completely immersed in the writing work during this period, there was a one-month hiatus in my entire animation production process. This month’s interruption has had an impact on subsequent work.
And although I did make progress and got an A in Informed Practice, I feel that my studio practice this time is not as good as the last year. I did not do well in the allocation of study time and energy for the two courses. When I think of the last school year, the same problem exists, but I didn’t realize it at the time. But I still have chances, I can work hard to balance in the next project, and I can verify it through the results. And it is not only a question of time allocation but also a question of efficiency. If I’m more efficient, then maybe the time allocation problem can be alleviated as well.
4. Research
I feel that the research this time is a bit like an imitation on the surface. This time, when I was collecting materials, it was more like looking for things to piece together. For example, we learned from this animator in terms of style and learned from another illustrator in terms of color. Except for the storyboard that I thought of myself, I found references and integrated them into my works based on my feelings. But in these references, why are the characters designed in this way, why did they choose such a color combination, why did they choose such a visual style, how they were created, and what the things behind them I didn’t think about it seriously. It is just superficially learning the good results that others have created, and it doesn’t have the autonomy to think deeply. For the discovery of this problem, I feel that it is one of the biggest gains of this work. I will pay attention to this direction of thinking in every type of study in the future.
